Silver Spring is an urbanized, but unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, in the United States. After Baltimore, Silver Spring is the second largest place in Maryland. Silver Spring is a major business hub lying at the apex of Washington, D.C.. The community has recently undergone a significant renaissance with the addition of major retail, residential, and office developments in the area. Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land.
